Antonio Adolfo & Carol Saboya – Ao Vivo (Live)

Posted on Jan 9, 2008

Genre:  Bossa Nova

Review:  Ao Vivo, made in collaboration with vocalist Carol Saboya, is the result of a father-daughter collaboration.  It is an exercise in delicate, low decibel, conversational music. The album is made up of interactive, truly collaborative interplay between Antonio and Carol, avoiding extremes of pitch and intensity and instead exploring fragments of melody and subtleties of harmony.

Tracklisting:  Abertura; Voce E Eu; Fotographia; Meu Limao, Meu Limoeiro; Bonita; Canto De Ossanha; Carinhoso; Insensatez; Wave; Passarim Chovendo Na Roseira; Sa Marina; Milagre; Corrida De Jangada.

Darol Anger & Mike Marshall - Woodshop

Posted on Dec 31, 2007

Genre:  Folk Jazz

Review:  Woodshop is an update album from a 1985 release called Chiaroscuro.  The album is the antithesis of flashy, attention-seeking music making and, accordingly, sold over 65000 copies in the five year period since it's release in 1985.  Woodshop is pretty, with an undercurrent of harmonic astringency.  It has depth and intelligence and further enhances the artist's reputation amongst those who heard it.

Tracklisting:  Intro; Peter Pan; Slip And Slide; Who Had Whom; Borealis; Interlude 1; The Unbearable Gift; Bach, Up; Interlude 2; Replaceitall; Hearts Wait; Interlude 3; The Creep; Outro.

Personnel:  Darol Anger - Violin, cello; Mike Marshall - Mandolin, guitar; Todd Phillips - Bass; Michael Manring - Bass; Todd Sickafoose - Bass; Phil Aaberg - Piano; Aaron Johnston - Percussion.

Ricardo Silveira – Outro Rio

Posted on Oct 15, 2007

Genre:  Latin Jazz Guitar

Review:  Over the past fifteen years, Ricardo Silveira has earned a reputation as one of Brazils's most admired and respected guitarists.  Silveira has the grace of Pat Metheny.  Even though the guitar has the first word and the last, the rhythm section is hard-working and indispensable, as drummers Renato Massa and Jurim Moreira; and percussionist Armando Marcal lay down a steady beat while bassists Andre Rodrigues and Jorge Helder paper over the gaps.

Tracklisting:  Outro Rio; Agua Da Nascente; Chuva De Manha; O Sol Na Janela; Melhores Tempos; Choro Bacana; O Monstro E A Flor; Dia Bom; A Medida Do Meu Coracao; Moonlight In Rangiroa; Viver Em Paz; Lembrancas.

Personnel:  Ricardo Silveira - Guitars, Andre Rodrigues - Acoustic bass; Renato Massa - Drums; Jorge Helder - Acoustic bass; Jurim Moreira - Drums; Joao Donato - Piano; Jurim Moreira - Drums; Nailor Proveta - Clarinet; Armando Marcal - Percussion; Maria Rita - Voice; Jacques Morelenbaum - Cello.

Terje Lie - Traveler

Posted on Sep 24, 2007

Genre:  Jazz Saxophone

Review:  Los Angeles-based saxophonist and singer Terje Lie's latest CD, Traveler on TCat Records was released in September 2006 and features original compositions by Terje.  He brings a lyrical quality to the session; walking when appropriate and dishing up melody at other times. He provides a strong rhythmic foundation that allows the quartet to swing and sway with authority.

Tracklisting: Pier Avenue; Travelers; Warp 7; MDDIII; Runnin' Outta Time; You; Lights Are Low; I Want To Love You; My Love; Silver Streaks.

The Perms - Better Days

Posted on Sep 13, 2007

Genre:  Power Pop/Pop Rock

Review:  Better Days is the new CD, released on November 2005, from Winnipeg-based rock act The Perms. It's not only the vocals that show incredible versatility, the musicianship and instrumental accomplishments of the band are pretty extensive. Scott Perry plays various instruments. Throughout the album, everything that everybody plays comes in at just the right place and at just the right time making Better Days a real attention-grabber from the first spin.

Tracklisting:  Bring You Down; Lies; Let's Not Fight; While I'm Away; Lorazapam; Versus; Second Thoughts; Saturday Night; The Comfort Of It All; Holding On; Hermit.

Dub Sac – Featuring The Storytellers

Posted on Sep 3, 2007

 \

Genre:  Dub

Review:  It's the quiet ones you have to watch for. Not the furtive loner, living behind drawn shades at the end of your cul-de-sac; but the music that crawls into your ear on little cat feet and whispers, "This is not what you're used to. This... is something else."  Dub Sac sends that message loud and clear.  The music evokes rest and relaxation, with a mellow yet vibrant quality.  It's funky, hip and fun.  It is more proof that great things come from small labels.

Tracklisting:  Dub Anthem; Bassy Man Dub; Skank For Mel; Everyday Is A Dub Day; Unit 1 Dub; Interlude2; The Elephant Dub; Fighting In The Streets Dub; Interlude; Dub Down The Walls; Jah Dubs Each And Everyone; Ancient Dub; Found Arte; Ancient Man.

Soundside - Soundside

Posted on Aug 23, 2007

Genre:  Pop Punk/Rock

Review:  With repeated listens I was hooked to many of the CD's best songs.  The music really takes center stage as I was continually impressed by how interesting the songs each remained despite the lengths. I couldn't believe it when I looked at the length of these songs I was listening to as some of them were close to five minutes.  This is a very impressive debut.

Tracklisting:  Back To The Beginning; Never Take Me Alive; With You; Stuck In A Memory; Creeping In My Mind; Into The Night; Stolen; Living In The Rain; Roscoe; Cross My Heart; Beautiful Life.

Personnel:  Rich Arcati - Lead vocals; Dan Reardon - Guitars, vocals; Christopher De Dona - Bass; Chris Multari - Drums.

The Sheepdogs - Trying To Grow

Posted on Aug 19, 2007

Genre:  Blues Rock

Review:  The debut album by The Sheepdogs shows what they are all about.  Melody, great guitars and incredible hooks.  The melodic harmonies that the Sheepdogs can achieve from different instruments is the strongpoint of this band. Those melodies will stay in your mind forever, especially the melody of Tonight, with the eerie vocals, organ and piano.  Fans of blues rock, this one is for you all the way!

Tracklisting:  Warmer Love; Headin' Down; It's Alright; Tonight; Hang Onto Yourself; Greedy Man; Natural Wonder; Save Yourself; Trying To Grow; You Never Listen; Shine On.

Personnel:  Ewan Currie - Lead vocals, guitars, pianos, organ; Leot Hanson - Guitar, backing vocals; Ryan Gullen - Bass, backing vocals; Sam Corbett - Drums, backing vocals; Randy Woods - Slide guitar; Styles Montreux - Saxophone.

Sean Lee - Two Amp Songs

Posted on Aug 17, 2007

Genre:  Songwriter/Pop Rock

Review:  One could easily lose track of time listening to this album, because it has the knack of reeling the listener in for an aural experience from the first song to the last. Will this be the best pop rock release of the new year?  Maybe, as pop rock/singer songwriter acts are becoming more elite as the days and months pass. There is a lot of mid-paced work that serves to build-up nicely and set up many of the melodies that are heard in any given song.

Tracklisting:  Today; Show And Tell; Gracefully; Tell Me; Born To Do; Fall Apart; What Does It Take?; Crooked Smile; Anyway; Goodnight Beautiful.

Personnel:  Sean Lee - Vocals, guitar; Leo Overtoom - Bass, drums, vocals, keyboard, guitar, cowbell; Saul Kessler - Lead guitar; Liz Kessler - Background vocals.

Kid Cozmo - Kid Cozmo

Posted on Aug 8, 2007

Genre:  Electronica/Rock

Review:  This is the first full-length release from Chicago based producer Noel Craig. This is actually a compilation of eps and demos made during 2005 & 2006.  The music is primarily an exercise in restraint.  Noel weaves a web of brooding electronic textures that occasionally climax in fits of primal, focused energy. The seven minute drone of Nothing Left To Feel is the album's epic ambient masterpiece.

Tracklisting:  El Cozmo De Kid; r.o.w.y.c.o.; Nothing Left To Feel; My Heart Is Overcome With Terror; What Happened To My World; Bubbles And Clouds; This Entertainment; Dancing Genes; Lull; r.o.w.y.c.o. (instrumental); Nothing Left To Feel (instrumental); Too Much Coffee (bonus track).

Sprayface - Mag Rims

Posted on Aug 2, 2007

Genre:  Instrumental Rock/Surf

Review:  The band's playing on Mag Rims is rhythmically and melodically intricate, tightly executed yet replete with inspired interplay and freeness. And for all the energy being expended, the musicians are listening to each other, working with dynamics and tension-release techniques, bringing as much attention to the group as to the individual instruments.

Tracklisting:  Pipedream; Reverend's Redemption; 9 Tana Leaves; Carrier Waves; Mag Rims; Trenchmouth; Rumblefish; Sundrenched; Submarine; The Range; The Eyes Have It; So You Want To Be A Rock N Roll Star; The Will Of The Wave; Endset.

Some Assembly Required - Stray Cliches

Posted on Jul 25, 2007

Genre:  Jangly Power Pop

Review:  While I may not call Some Assembly Required a truly unique band due to their similarities other bands in the genre, I will still say that this album goes a long way toward cementing them as a great addition to the power pop scene.  That did not stop Stray Cliches being one the most memorable and enjoyable listening experiences I had this year, which does not have a single weak track on it.

Tracklisting:  Intro; What You Want To Hear; Take A Chance; Paper Doll; Miss Objectively; Marisol's Head; You're A Liar; She's Just Lost Her Mind; Dorian Gray; Made To Order; Break Free.

Lightspeed - Waves

Posted on Jul 24, 2007

Genre:  Progressive Rock

Review:  Lightspeed are excellent musicians and that is what shows first and foremost on Waves. The guys can play, pay attention to their leads and shifting tempos. On the album a very short distance separates rockers from warm acoustic melodies.  The album's main guitar work is centered around cleanly executed well defined riffs, backed by ambient keyboard washes and soaring vocal work.  Highly recommended for progsters.

Tracklisting:  Peak Fires; Things To Come; Young At Heart; 7 Waves Of Emotion; Breath Away; One Last Time; Innocence Of Life; Bridges; Let Me In; Razor's Edge; Fly Away.

Personnel:  John Perichini - Vocals, drums, saxophone; Rod Chappell - Bass, keyboards, guitars, vocals; Gene Murray - Guitars, keyboards, mandolin, vocals; Terry Crawford - Drums, guitars, keyboards, vocals; Gary Chappell - Keyboards, harmonica, flute, saxophone, vocals.

Hedgod - Little Brother Of War

Posted on Jul 23, 2007

Genre:  Funk/Heavy Rock

Review:  Hedgod has drawn from his influences and has come up with a very enjoyable alternative/modern hard rock album. There's several tracks on this album that are really outstanding tracks and are sure to attract some attention.  If you enjoy solid alternative/modern hard rock but without the annoying "emo" qualities of the current chart heavyweights and are partial to bands like Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave then you just might like this.

Tracklisting:  Standby (Intro); Cosmic; Grow; Be; Seed; Breathe; Monster; She Cries; War Of Paradise; Mo Down.

Personnel:  Cloud - All instruments, producer

Patrick Flynn – Good News

Posted on Jul 19, 2007

\

Genre:  Blues/Folk

Review:  Many different musical influences are apparent on Good News; including a blues feel on "Good News Blues," the folky straight-ahead "Don't Take Your Love Away," and the roots rock feel of "Money Don't Matter". The feel of the familiar combined with constant surprises is very enticing and enables Patrick to give listening pleasure many times.  The pacing of the album is also very good.

Tracklisting:  Good News Blues; Don't Take Your Love Away; Money Don't Matter; Maybe You're The Dream; Take The Spirit And Run; Mr. Big Time (Uncle Sam); Nothin' But The Rain; What I Say To You; The Realist; I Wanna Go There; Gone Too Soon; Good News Blues (Instrumental).

Herb Gibson - Lets Play

Posted on Jul 17, 2007

Genre:  Jazz Vibes

Review:  Herb Gibson's music is a very enticing mix of the accessible and the original, making the formal elements an extra bonus. It is hard to tell where the line between composition/arrangement and improvisation lies, which is always a good sign and the musicians really dig in and seem to be having a very good time.

Tracklisting:  Sudden Death; You Leave Me Breathless;  Cheesecake; Dat Dere; How Do You Keep The Music Playing?; Monk-n-Bird; Moon Ray; Ignunt Oil; Who Can I Turn To?

Calvin Keys - Hand Made Portrait

Posted on Jul 16, 2007

Genre:  Jazz Guitar

Review:  California based jazz guitarist Calvin Keys latest album Hand Made Portrait, combines Broadway show tunes, Great American Songbook classics, bossa nova and jazz standards together.  The origin of the music is very interesting, but in the end, the only thing that matters is whether the music engages the listener, which Calvin most certainly does.

Tracklisting:  All The Things You Are; Love & Innocence; West Coast Blues; Wave; Little Niles; Oleo; Naima; Good Bait; I'll Remember April; Sachmo's Song; Accustomed To Your Face.

Genre:  Instrumental Progressive Metal

Review:  Natural Born Player is the first studio album by guitarist Gabriel Messervier.  His playing ranges from driving pneumatic tone clusters to delicate neo-classical flourishes. Francois Pelletier is a sympathetic partner, whose volatile drumming vacillates from thunderous palpitations to spectral washes.

Gates Of Slumber - Suffer No Guilt

Posted on Jul 12, 2007

Genre:  Doom Metal

Review:  This is a good effort.  Luckily for The Gates Of Slumber they have a true cornerstone to build around in the vocals of Karl Simon. There are certainly shining moments on this album, but there are silent parts on the longer tracks which makes for an arduous listening experience.

Tracklisting:  Agel Of Death; Suffer No Guilt; Gemini; Riders Of Doom; Slay The Weak; Wyrmwood; Dweller In The Deep; Children Of The Night; God Wills It; The Woe Of Kings.

Fall Of The Idols - Womb Of The Earth

Posted on Jul 9, 2007

Genre:  Doom Metal

Review:  Womb Of The Earth is an absolute delight. The compositions, chordal arrangements, instrumentation, excellent musicianship and ‘sound' of the record is much more than can be expected. The intensity and emotion is in direct contrast to the fact that each song has a slow sludgy riffs, devoid of any fast tempos or pulse.

Tracklisting:  Sown Are The Seeds Of Doom; Atonement For The One; The Grand Act; Agonies Be Thy Children; Keep Wandering The Night; Ungodly Thirteen; The Walk; The Pathway.

Dan Balmer - Thanksgiving

Posted on Jul 7, 2007

Genre:  Jazz Guitar/Organ

Review:  Thanksgiving is the latest release by the Oregon jazz guitarist, Dan Balmer.  One theme common in all of the tracks is the harmonic layering done by the trio.  Dan begins with a plaintive guitar line that invites Gary Versace's organ to join in.  Matt Wilson adds cymbals to the mix, giving the sound more texture and depth.

Tracklisting:  Venus; Allow Myself; Just Like You; The Longest Day Of The Year; Hearts Of Steel; Greasy Kid Stuff; The Sea The Sea; Stalled; Rain; Thanksgiving.

Sorrowind - Ghost Of Reality

Posted on Jul 2, 2007

Genre:  Melancholic Power/Prog Metal

Review:  Despite being Finnish, Sorrowind is an entirely new band to me upon receiving their demo releases.  It is particularly suprising how ready the band sounds on their second demo Just Like A Child.  They mix melodic walls of metal guitars and lush harmony vocals with layers of keyboards with hints of pregressive riffing.

Tracklisting:  Reasons To Give In:  Say Goodbye; The Game Of The Beast; Reasons To Give In; Deep Inside; Numbed With Grief.  Just Like A Child:  Just Like A Child; Realize It; No Absolution; Ice Cold.  Ghost Of Reality:  Ghost Of Reality; Sorrowind; Actions Of Profanity; Children Of The Night.

Elewout De Raad Project - The Cross

Posted on Jun 28, 2007

Genre:  Jazz Fusion

Review:  If Hollands's own guitarist got comments on his report cards, they were probably along the lines of: "Plays well with others." With The Cross, Elewout has proven that he has ‘big ears'.

On this debut the leader embodies fusion, a vision of collaboration and egalitarianism, where the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts.

Genre:  Heavy/Thrash Metal

Review:  It's great to hear a debut that comes out of the gates blazing like this, full of confidence, with a distinctive modern sound anchored deep in the metal tradition. The group dynamic is loose and spontaneous, and Dave solos with a solid, percussive left hand nailing down his free-flying right-hand explorations..

Tracklisting:  Fight Ourselves; Play With Fire; Born A Liar; Life Run Cold; Dream; Gods; Darkness; Deathwish.

Posted on Jun 22, 2007

Genre:  Pop Metal/Heavy Rock/Grunge

Review:  The greatest strength of Hurricane Cletis is that they do not have to rely on a barrage of heavy guitar riffs to make an impact.  The group works together to create a fantastic moodiness to their music, ranging from beautiful acoustic bits, to catchy hooks and superior melodic guitar riffs.  You are being presented with a success story in the making.

Review:  The name of this superlative album by Swing Of Sahara, clearly a play on words, refers to the fact that the group mix rock with Balkan music, and the two are no less resourceful and exhilarating.
